A New Cure for Morning Sickness?
A promising study from researchers in Israel and Canada reveals that a prescription drug used for heartburn may actually aid women who experience morning sickness. As of now, there is no cure for morning sickness, as doctors are reluctant to give women medication that may affect their developing fetuses.
Time.com reported on the study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which found that the medication metoclopramide (not currently approved in the U.S. by the FDA for morning sickness), helps pregnant women with symptoms like nausea and won’t increase risk of harm to their babies.
Metoclopramide is used in Europe and overseas to aid in morning sickness. Results from the study, which included 3,500 babies in Israel, found that in mothers who used the drug, the rates of congenital birth defects were no higher than usual.
Dr. Gideon Koren, director at the University of Toronto, tells Time.com, “I do think the FDA should look at it as a treatment for morning sickness.”
