However, you may not be sure where to turn. There are lots of baby hair care products on the market but very few designed specifically for African American babies. Here are some hair care tips for African American babies:
Best Hair Care for African American Babies
- The best way to moisturize your baby scalp is to apply a small amount of oil to the scalp 2 times daily. Try to choose organic olive or coconut oil.
- Wash your baby’s scalp with an all natural shampoo, you can either make your own or purchase one. You can also make your baby a shampoo at home. Simply mix ¼ cup of distilled water with ¼ cup of herbal green tea. Add honey and lemon juice for added shine and moisture. This will cleanse and strengthen your baby’s hair, although it will not produce a lather.
- Conditioning the baby’s hair is an important part of your hair care routine. A deep conditioning treatment should be used once a month. A conditioning rinse can be used in between shampoos to keep the hair healthy.
- Use a soft-bristle baby brush to gently go through your baby’s hair right before shampooing it. This will loosen up any knots and tangles that can get snarled further while you’re washing her hair.
- Shampoo the baby’s hair every seven to 10 days with a gentle baby shampoo. Mild shampoos that are specially formulated for African-American babies’ locks are available at specialty hair care shops.
- Avoid bad chemicals on your baby’s hair, these include Vaseline, petroleum, mineral oil, sulfates, and silicones. Be also certain not to apply lotions to your child’s hair that contain parabens. Parabens are proven cancer-causing agents.
- Avoid frequent hair wash; try to wash your child’s hair more than once or twice in a week unless absolutely necessary.
- Choose hair care products carefully for your baby. Using the wrong products can do more harm than good. Once the baby turns two, you will need to use a natural oil for conditioning the scalp. Jojoba, avocado or coconut oils are good choices.
Your baby may be sensitive or allergic to some ingredients, like essential oils, so watch closely for unusual reactions or breakouts. So, If you more baby hair care tips then share with us via comments below.
